Congratulations to the Salmon Arm Tennis Club Ladies Team, Shirley Knorr, Loree Boyd, Cynthia Langford, Marietjie du Plessis and Marianne VanBuskirk, competed at the Whistler Racquet Club and won the Provincial Championships! These ladies, who have trained together as a team for almost two years (including their successful win of the 2014 Interior Winter League) were elated with being crowned Provincial Champions of Ladies' Team Tennis. “Team Tennis” consists of five players on a team where one player competes in a singles match and the other four players compete in two doubles matches to try to gain overall wins. Marietjie du Plessis competed in all of the singles matches for the team. The other four ladies strategically selected combinations of pairings to compete against other teams in their doubles matches. The tournament began on Friday August 22 and in the first match, the Salmon Arm ladies defeated Team West Vancouver Night. On Saturday, Team Salmon Arm then defeated West Vancouver Day and Victoria Net Assets to clinch first place in the Provincial Championship standings, despite having to still face a fourth opponent on Sunday morning. Although the Salmon Arm ladies had very close matches against Team Nanaimo Westwood, Salmon Arm lost this match but still had first place ranking at the tournament because of prior weekend wins. The Championship match was against Team West Vancouver Night (who was in second place) and the final match went to a thrilling finale with Team Salmon Arm winning 4-6 6-4 13-11 in an exciting tie-breaker! The ladies are grateful to the Whistler Racquet Club, Miele, Tennis Canada, Tennis BC and more importantly to their families, the community of Salmon Arm and to the Salmon Arm Tennis Club for continued support in their quest to become provincial champions.
