August 26, 2013 Council Meeting Notes

Posted on September 3, 2013 at 8:39 AM by Nancy Cooper

Council presented Dan MacQuarrie with his own copy of the new “Dan’s Bylaw” No Smoking park sign. Smoking is a health issue. Mr. MacQuarrie started talking about the need for “no smoking” bylaws when he was a Salmon Arm alderman 38 years ago! Council appreciates the time and effort Mr. MacQuarrie put into smoking cessation bylaws and regulations. Thank you, Dan. Our community is a much healthier place to live because of your efforts.

Okanagan Regional Library - ORL
ORL Executive Director, Stephanie Hall, presented a report on our Salmon Arm library usage. Over all our library usage is up 3½% while usage in the overall ORL system is down by almost the same amount. It is nice to see our library is well used.

Stephanie, also wanted people to know they can download magazines, and music, as well as text and audio books from the ORL website. Personally, I have downloaded audio books to listen to when travelling.

Subdivisions
  • The Muto`s who own Salmon Arm camping just past Haney House applied to include a 30 unit strata development on their property in the Salmon Arm urban containment boundary. Motos have completed all the servicing requirements making it less complicated and easier for Council approved their application. Their application will now proceed to public hearing on this coming up on September 9th at 7pm.
  • A subdivision request by the Ritchie family to divide their property at on 54 Avenue NE into 2 lots was also approved by council and will also proceed to public hearing on September 9th.

Reader Board signs
The Heritage Commission proposed “reader” signs were a passed by council. You will see 3 signs going up in what was once called the government section of town. One sign will be in front of the Old courthouse, a second at the former Post Office building, which is now the Art Gallery and the third one at the building across the street from the Art Gallery. This building which is now used as a Seniors Drop In-Centre was once our Salmon Arm City Hall. I am certain we will see more of these information boards at other heritage sites in the future.

BC Transit – Bus Service
Upcoming changes to Bus Service were approved by Council. Watch for more information on these changes and the “shopper’s shuttle’ in a few weeks.
