Program Development
The City of Salmon Arm (City) intends to implement a city-wide Curbside Food Waste Collection program in 2018, coinciding with the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s (CSRD) phase-in of a food waste ban at the Salmon Arm Landfill.

Trial AreaTrial Properties.jpg
The Trial area was selected because it contained several different types of households in differing densities. The area includes rural and urban single-family dwellings of differing densities, as well as a 55+ high-density strata development.

Trail Purpose
During the Trial phase, residents in the selected neighbourhood evaluated the different elements of a curbside food waste program such as convenience, container size and type, collection materials (i.e. container liners), and collection frequency. The City evaluated program operational requirements and costs. The goal was to gather information that would help to develop a city-wide program that diverts as much food waste as possible from the landfill by making it convenient and easy for residents to dispose of their food waste, while keeping costs to a minimum.

Cost Considerations
Several elements go into determining how much a full-scale program will cost.
