Trial Guide
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) has partnered with the City of Salmon Arm (City) to develop a Curbside Food Waste Collection program. Your neighborhood has been selected to participate in a trial program. Your participation and feedback will be very important in helping to design a program that can be successfully implemented citywide.

Representatives were in your neighborhood in the last week of June to drop off your Food Waste Collection Kit and your Food Waste Cart. Please review the kit’s contents and contact us if you are missing any items.

You may download this guide in pdf format here.

Please read these guidelines carefully and feel free to contact either the City or the CSRD with your questions, concerns, or feedback.

Supplies

CURBSIDE FOOD WASTE CART
Line your Curbside Food Waste Cart with the liners provided. You have been provided with enough liners to last the entire trial period. Place your cart in a convenient location so that you may easily bring your kitchen scraps to it as well as wheel it to the curb on collection day. Carts must only be used for food waste.

Carts are rented from Progressive Waste Solutions and must be lined to keep them in optimal condition. Please contact the City if you run out of cart liners.

KITCHEN CATCHER
You may use your Kitchen Catcher to carry food waste to your Curbside Food Waste Cart. Place it in a convenient location such as under your sink or next to your garbage. You have been provided with Kitchen Catcher liners to test; however, they are not required.

You may keep the Kitchen Catcher when the trial is complete.

CLEAR GARBAGE BAGS (OPTIONAL)
You have been provided with clear bags for garbage collection as an optional part of the trial. The use of the clear bags for your garbage is requested so that program representatives can evaluate waste composition at a glance. You will not be penalized for having food waste in your garbage.

Collection
COLLECTION DAYS
Garbage: Monday
Food Waste: Wednesday
Recycling: Alternating Fridays

GUIDELINES
  • Place your Curbside Food Waste Cart similar to how you would place your garbage or recycling. It must be no more than 1m (3 ft) from the roadway, or (where there is a sidewalk) as close to the roadway as possible, without blocking traffic or the sidewalk.
  • Curbside Food Waste Carts must be placed at the curb by 7 AM on Wednesday morning.
  • You may notice a change in the time your garbage is collected. This is to accommodate the rerouting of garbage trucks to collect and weigh only garbage from the Trial area. Please place your bags by 7 AM on Monday morning.

BI-WEEKLY GARBAGE (OPTIONAL)
As part of the trial, you are being asked to place your garbage for collection every 2 weeks. We would like you to evaluate whether or not bi-weekly garbage collection would be feasible once food a waste collection program is implemented. This is an optional part of the trial. Garbage trucks will still be collecting in your
neighbourhood on their regular weekly schedule.
