Why can’t I put yard and garden waste in with my food waste?
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) already prohibits yard and garden waste from burial at the landfill, thereby removing it from the garbage stream. The Curbside Food Waste Collection Trial is a part of the CSRD’s 5-year implementation strategy to also remove food waste from of its landfills. An important element of the Trial is obtaining data on food waste diversion rates*(i.e. how much food waste are we removing from the garbage stream). We would not be able to get an accurate measurement of food waste diversion rates during the Trial if we mixed it with yard and garden waste.

The City has heard from residents that it would be beneficial and convenient to merge the yard waste and food waste into one weekly collection. This is valuable feedback and will be considered when a city-wide program is developed; however, food waste specifically is being studied during the Trial.

*Food Waste Diversion Rate (%) = Food Waste/(Garbage + Food Waste)
