Summer is heating up and so is our risk from wildfire!

The City of Salmon Arm is currently under an Extreme Fire Hazard Rating and while many of us enjoy a warm, dry summer, this weather increases the fire hazard in our parks and forested areas.

Under the current hazard rating, the following activities are prohibited within the City of Salmon Arm on both public and private lands:
  • The burning of any waste, slash or other materials
  • Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area
  • Campfires
  • Fireworks and firecrackers
  • Burn barrels
  • Lanterns, tiki torches and similar kinds of torches
  • The use of stoves and other portable campfire apparatuses that are not CSA-approved or ULC-approved
Furthermore, please note that smoking is prohibited at all times in City parks and public lands.

Serious fines and penalties can result for not adhering to these rules while in the jurisdiction of the BC Wildfire Service or the Municipality. Anyone found in contravention of an open burring prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150.00, required to pay an administration penalty of $10,000.00 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000.00 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

Residents and visitors both play an important role in fire prevention and detection and also for keeping our parks and forested lands fire safe.

To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, Call 911 or toll-free 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks. Check regularly online at for the latest information and restrictions.
