100 years of Salmon Arm Fire Department

Posted on December 17, 2013 at 1:37 PM by Nancy Cooper

December 13, 2013 marked the 100th Anniversary of the first meeting of the Salmon Arm Volunteer Fire Department. The fire department celebrated this significant day by hosting a meeting at Fire Hall 3. The Fire Chief read the minutes of the December 13, 1913 meeting.  He also made note of significant fires and fire department events over the past 100 years. The meeting was followed by an unveiling of the restored fire bell which was rung 10 times, once for each decade. The ten people in the attached picture were given the privilege of each ring the bell once. In addition, Chief Shirley rang the fire siren. This siren, which is no longer in use, was once the call to fire practice on Tuesday night at 7pm or the signal to attend a fire in the community. Many of you, in the downtown area, may have heard this siren Friday night and recognized the sound from years ago.

On behalf of City Council I want to thank all the Volunteer fire fighters who served our community over the last 100 years and in the future. Thank you for your dedication, service and for answering the call whenever you are needed.
